The Norskling free Norwegian course is an email course for English speakers. You pick A1, A2 or B1, and we send you one lesson a week: vocabulary, one grammar rule explained in plain English, and an interactive exercise. A1 and A2 run for 20 lessons, B1 runs for 30. The whole course is free and asks for no payment details.
What you get in the free Norwegian course
The material comes from the courses we have taught at Norskling for seven years. It follows the order we actually teach in, rather than a pile of unconnected flashcards.
- One lesson a week. About 30 minutes. Enough to make progress, small enough that you do not quit in week three.
- Grammar in English, examples in Norwegian. Written for someone whose grammar reference points are English ones, so V2 word order, the article glued to the end of the noun and the three genders get the attention they need.
- An interactive exercise with every lesson. Click the link in the email, answer, and see immediately what went wrong and why.
- Vocabulary from real life. Talking to your boss, the doctor, a job interview, NAV, the neighbour by the bins.
- One click to unsubscribe. The link sits in the footer of every email.
Pick your level: A1, A2 or B1
Three separate courses, three separate lists. You sign up for the one that matches where you are. If you are not sure, take the free level test first.

Who this course is for
Most of our students are people who moved to Norway for work, for a partner or for studies, and who function in English all day. This course fits if:
- you live in Norway and want to stop switching to English mid-sentence,
- you are moving soon and want the basics before you land,
- you have started Norwegian a few times and dropped it every time,
- you attend a course and want something between the classes,
- you want to see how we teach before paying for anything.
It will not fit if you need a certificate or Norskprøve preparation for a fixed date. For that, private lessons or a group course are the better choice.
Why we give this course away
Because it is the most honest way for you to find out whether our method suits you. Over 20 weeks you see exactly how we explain grammar, how we pick vocabulary and what an exercise looks like. If that works for you and you want to move faster, we run group and private courses. If it does not, you keep the 20 lessons and owe us nothing.
Common questions about the free Norwegian course
Is the free Norwegian course really free?
Yes. Every lesson, exercise and handout is free. You give no card details and there is no trial that turns into a subscription. You give a first name and an email address, and we send you the lessons. One click in any email unsubscribes you.
How long does the course take?
A1 and A2 are 20 lessons, so 20 weeks. B1 is 30 lessons, so 30 weeks. The first lesson arrives as soon as you sign up, the rest come every seven days. One lesson takes about 30 minutes including the exercise.
Which level should I choose if I do not know where I am?
Choose A1 if you are starting from zero or know a handful of words. A2 if you understand simple sentences and can describe your day. B1 if you manage at work and in offices but want to speak more freely. You can also take the free level test.
Is the course taught in English?
Yes. Grammar and teaching notes are in English, while examples, vocabulary and sentences are in Norwegian. English and Norwegian are both Germanic languages, so we show you where that gives you free vocabulary (hus, bok, komme, drikke) and where it sets a trap (gift means married, fart means speed, sky means cloud).
Do I get a certificate?
No. The email course has no exam and no certificate. If you need a documented level, for example for work, for a residence application or for citizenship, we prepare you for the Norskprøve exam in a group course or in private lessons.
Do I need a Google account to sign up?
No. The sign-up form works without logging in. You give a first name, an email address and your level.
What if the lessons do not reach my inbox?
Check the Promotions and Spam folders. Move the message to your main inbox and add info@norskling.no to your contacts. If that does not help, write to us and we will check your sign-up by hand.
Can I sign up for two levels at once?
You can, but we advise against it. Two lessons a week from two different levels is the shortest route to abandoning both. Start with one, finish it, then sign up for the next.
Start this week
Signing up takes 30 seconds and the first lesson is in your inbox a few minutes later.
