1. Why a real teacher beats an app
When you search for a Norwegian course online, you find a lot of the same things: Duolingo, Babbel, Mondly, YouTube channels, and self-study platforms with pre-recorded videos. They all have their place — but they all share the same fundamental limitation.
They can't talk back.
They can't notice you always make the same mistake with verb placement. They can't slow down when you're confused. They can't push you to use a word you've been avoiding. They can't give you honest feedback on your pronunciation. They can't ask a follow-up question when you say something interesting in Norwegian.
A live teacher on Zoom can do all of that. And for most people who want to use Norwegian in real life — at work, for the Norskprøven, with neighbours, at the municipality — speaking and being understood is the point. No app gets you there the way a real person does.
What they offer
- Pre-recorded videos and exercises
- Gamified vocabulary drilling
- Grammar rules presented one-by-one
- Automated feedback ("Correct!" / "Try again")
- No one notices when you stop
- No speaking practice with a real person
What we offer
- Live conversation with a real teacher
- Immediate, honest feedback on errors
- Lessons built around your goals
- Progress tracked lesson by lesson
- Speaking practice from day one
- A teacher who actually knows you
2. What you get in each lesson
Every lesson is different because every student is different. There's no fixed script. Depending on your level and goals, a typical lesson at Norskling might include:
Speaking practice
You speak Norwegian from the very first lesson. Real conversations, realistic situations, no waiting until "you're ready."
Instant error correction
Mistakes are caught and explained in the moment — so they don't become permanent habits.
Grammar in context
Grammar is taught when you need it, not according to a textbook chapter schedule. You understand it because you see it in use.
Listening comprehension
Training to understand real Norwegian — natural speech, not just slow, over-enunciated textbook audio.
Writing practice
Emails, messages, short texts — written Norwegian for real situations you actually encounter.
Exam preparation
Targeted Norskprøven prep — mock tests, speaking exam practice, and focused work on whichever parts you struggle with most.
3. Who is this online Norwegian course for?
Norskling's online Norwegian course works for a wide range of people — the common thread is wanting to actually use Norwegian, not just study it abstractly.
- Immigrants living in Norway who need Norwegian for work, daily life, or official processes
- People preparing for the Norskprøven — for citizenship (B1), permanent residency (A2), or professional authorisation (B2)
- Complete beginners who want a structured, guided start rather than fumbling through an app alone
- Intermediate learners stuck at A2 who can't seem to break through to B1 — one of the most common situations
- Professionals needing Norwegian for their specific job: healthcare, construction, public sector, education
- People living anywhere in Norway — or outside Norway — who want live Norwegian lessons without travelling
- Students planning to apply for Norwegian-taught university programmes who need B2
Because the course is fully online via Zoom, you can be in Oslo, Bergen, Tromsø, or on a platform in the North Sea. You can also be in Poland, Lithuania, Spain, or Ukraine — preparing before you move to Norway. All you need is a laptop and internet.
4. All levels — A1 to B2
It doesn't matter where you start. What matters is that you're in the right level and moving at a pace that challenges you without overwhelming you.
| Level | Where you are now | Where this course takes you |
|---|---|---|
| A1 | Complete beginner — little or no Norwegian | Basic conversations, introductions, numbers, daily phrases. A solid foundation for everything that follows. |
| A2 | Know some basics but struggle in real situations | Functional daily communication, simple writing, understanding instructions. Ready for the A2 Norskprøven. |
| B1 | Can communicate but feel uncertain and slow | Confident in most everyday situations, professional communication, nuanced writing. Passes the B1 oral exam for citizenship. |
| B2 | Solid communicator, wants professional or academic level | Complex discussions, academic writing, professional fluency. Meets requirements for university and healthcare jobs. |
5. Languages of instruction
Lessons are conducted primarily in Norwegian — that's the goal, and immersion is the most effective method. But Monika can support students in multiple languages when needed, particularly at beginner levels where a quick explanation in your own language saves a lot of confusion.
If you're a Polish or Spanish speaker, this is a genuine advantage — Monika can explain why Norwegian works differently from what you're used to, in a way that actually makes sense for your language background. Spanish speakers can write to Monika in Spanish.

7. Online Norwegian course for Norskprøven preparation
Many people who find Norskling are preparing for the Norskprøven — Norway's official language test required for citizenship, permanent residency, and certain professions. It's one of the best uses of an online Norwegian course with a real teacher, because the exam has a significant speaking component that simply cannot be prepared for alone.
The Norskprøven oral exam takes 20–30 minutes and is conducted live with two examiners. You need to be able to speak naturally, handle unexpected questions, and respond without long pauses. The only way to get good at that is to practise it — with a real person.
Monika runs focused Norskprøven preparation sessions that cover all four parts of the exam: reading, listening, writing and speaking. For most students, the speaking part is where targeted preparation makes the biggest difference.

How long is each lesson?
Standard lessons are 60 minutes. Some students prefer 45-minute sessions for intensive focused practice. You can discuss the format with Monika before you start — there's no one-size-fits-all.
How often should I take lessons to make real progress?
One lesson per week gives steady, sustainable progress. Two lessons per week accelerates things noticeably — especially helpful if you have an upcoming exam or a deadline. Whatever you choose, consistent practice between lessons (even 15–20 minutes daily) makes a bigger difference than lesson frequency alone.
Is the course accredited or officially recognised?
Norskling's private and group lessons are not part of the state-approved Norwegian language training programme — they are supplementary private lessons. For citizenship and permanent residency applications, what matters is your result on the Norskprøven, not where you studied. Since the September 2025 rule change abolished the 300 study-hour requirement, the test result is the only thing immigration authorities check. Norskling's lessons are designed to get you to that result.
What do I need technically to take lessons online?
A laptop or desktop computer with a webcam and microphone, and a stable internet connection. Zoom is free to download. Mobile phones work in a pinch but are not ideal for language lessons — the screen is too small for written materials and the audio quality is often lower.
I've tried Duolingo and other apps but I'm not making progress. Will this be different?
Almost certainly, yes — but for a specific reason. Apps are good for building vocabulary and recognising patterns. They are poor at developing actual speaking ability, because speaking requires a real person to speak to. Most people who feel stuck after using apps are stuck specifically on the speaking side. Live lessons fix that directly.
Can I take lessons even if I live outside Norway?
Yes. The course is fully online, so your location doesn't matter. Many students take lessons before moving to Norway, so they arrive with a working foundation. Others are Norwegian heritage learners living abroad. As long as the time zones allow for a reasonable lesson time, geography is not a barrier.
Can my employer pay for the course?
Yes. Many Norwegian employers cover Norwegian language training for international employees as part of professional development or integration support. Norskling issues invoices for lesson packages. Mention it in your email and Monika will handle the details.
